A Documentary Wedding at Hackney Town Hall and Old Sessions House, London

"Thank you so much Matt! The photos are awesome. You've captured the day so well. The pics are AMAZING!"
Hackney Town Hall & Old Sessions House Wedding | London
I'm so grateful Lauren & Tim's search for a documentary wedding photographer in London lead them to my (virtual) door, because this one was unreal! Their July wedding at Hackney Town Hall and Old Sessions House brought together two of my favourite London venues, with their civil ceremony in East London followed by a classic London bus trip to their celebration at Clerkenwell's most characterful and historic venue.
Both Lauren & Tim were very clear from the outset that they wanted their day to flow naturally and without interruption, which was music to my ears. As a London documentary wedding photographer, I'm all about letting the day breathe and unfold around the people who matter most. I shoot such a wide range of weddings across the world, but one thing is always consistent wherever I am; the emotion is flowing and those beautiful moments of connection between people will always happen naturally, if you let them. Lauren & Tim's London wedding was certainly no different.
Tim greeted his guests at the Empire Tavern for a quick pint before everyone made their way across to Hackney Town Hall (literally next door) to prepare for Lauren's arrival...
A Wedding Ceremony at Hackney Town Hall, East London
Lauren & Tim's wedding ceremony was beautiful in it's simplicity. Short wedding ceremonies really do allow the natural emotion to flow and really help keep everyone 'in the moment', and this one had plenty of emotion. And how can you not have a good time when you're surrounded by such a gorgeous art deco backdrop like Hackney Town Hall. The Committee Room is such a spacious and light space for a wedding ceremony, which was only made more special by how amazing the Hackney team were on the day.
After the ceremony, everyone made their way across the road to the waiting pair of red London buses for the short journey to Old Sessions House in Clerkenwell...
Wedding Reception at Old Sessions House, London
So the venues have changed, but the emotions have not. The hugs and laughs kept flowing at Old Sessions House, as did the welcome drinks, before everyone made their way upstairs to the dining room, ready for the speeches and some food. And this feels like a good time to chat through my approach to being a London wedding photographer.
My #1 priority for all my couples is that they get as much time as possible to spend with their guests, ahead of any formal or posed photos, so they can go and enjoy all the emotion and joy in the room. Lauren & Tim were absolute gold dust in that they didn't want any formal/group photos, they just wanted to go and enjoy their time with everyone, which is exactly what they did. It also meant that we could sneak out and grab a few quick portraits while their guests were seated for dinner. Awesome portraits don't take long, and that's a really nice window of time to use, because all the guests are preoccupied with something else to do, so I didn't have to take Lauren & Tim away from spending time with people to shoot them. Nice and simple...
Old Sessions House Wedding
So here we are, almost at the end of a truly amazing day, and all that's left to do is party! The speeches were everything you'd want them to be; funny, emotional, authentic and heartfelt. After things had wrapped up in the dining room, everyone headed across the balcony to the bar, where cocktails were served and the music was pumping. The party kicked off in style and we all settled in to a very chilled and fun-filled evening.
